The Twins
In ‘The Twins’, black and white photographs of the artist and her twin-sister as children taken by their grandfather are re-used to create a narrative that comments on the shaping of one’s gendered identity. With playfulness and a touch of nostalgia, ‘The Twins’ suggests a becoming of self through a sense of boyishness and doubling. This is a world where adventures of the everyday shape the narrative of the images. Photographed in the Swedish suburbia and countryside of the mid 1980s, these two tomboys appear inseparable. Whether posing as vampires, building toy boats or making snowmen it seems to be the intimacy of growing up together that shapes a sense of personal identity and gender, which culminates in a feeling of belonging. ‘The Twins’ is a Wellcome Trust funded project, commissioned by Photo-ID: www.photo-id.org.uk.
